Tempo Reps: Record the Timing Before Comparing Loads

A deliberately slower repetition is a changed task. Record the timing instruction before deciding what its load or repetition count says about your progress.

Quick summary

  • Confirm what each part of the tempo instruction refers to.
  • Keep timing and range consistent within the planned version.
  • Use home leg care as a separate seated routine rather than another timing challenge.

The same load can belong to different tasks

You normally lower a weight at a comfortable controlled pace. This week, the coach asks for a deliberate slow lowering phase, and you complete fewer repetitions. That result does not automatically mean you lost strength. The movement instruction changed, so the comparison needs a different label.

Tempo notation can also be misunderstood. A sequence of numbers may describe lowering, pausing, lifting, and pausing again, but programs do not always explain their convention clearly. Ask how the notation applies to your exercise, especially when the first visible action is a lift rather than a lowering movement. Do not guess from the digits alone.

Write the instruction in words before using shorthand

Translate the assigned tempo into a short sentence that identifies each phase. Clarify whether a pause is required, whether the lifting action is controlled or intentionally quick, and what should happen if the timing cannot be maintained. Your coach should choose a load that suits the assigned task and your experience.

Record this version separately from ordinary repetitions if the distinction affects your progression. Keep range, equipment, and assistance consistent while practising the timing. If you use a metronome or count, confirm that it helps you follow the instruction rather than distracting from the movement. NSCA includes auditory cues among the tools coaches can use to direct movement timing.

Avoid making the repetition slower every week simply because slow feels demanding. That introduces another progression variable without necessarily serving the plan. Ask whether the next step is better consistency, more repetitions, a load change, or returning to another intended tempo. The record should reveal which variable changed.

Example: a leg press with a new lowering instruction

Imagine a lifter has a familiar leg-press setup and receives a coach-assigned slow lowering phase. They use the old working load and cannot maintain the timing through the set. Instead of rushing the last repetitions and recording them as complete, they stop at the agreed endpoint and note where timing changed.

The coach adjusts the task, and the lifter creates a separate tempo entry. A later comparison uses that same instruction and seat setting. The earlier normal-tempo record remains useful for its own version. The example is about identifying a changed task; it does not prescribe a universal tempo or claim that slower repetitions are superior.

Keep the evening routine easy to follow

After the timed practice is finished, KIOKOP PRO compression boots can provide full-leg air compression while you review the instruction in plain language. Fit the boots, connect the hoses, and select and start the controller following current guidance. The seated operation leaves your hands available without repeatedly moving a care tool. Keep the controls reachable and check product fit separately. There is no need to turn product use into another exercise-tempo progression.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compare tempo and ordinary reps in one graph?

You can display both if the versions are labelled, but do not treat their load and repetition figures as interchangeable. Separate entries usually make changes easier to interpret.
