Squat Depth: Set a Repeatable Target With Your Coach

A useful squat target is one you understand and can repeat for the assigned task. Work with your coach before turning depth into a comparison with someone else's video.

Quick summary

  • Clarify the squat version and intended range before selecting a load.
  • Keep setup and depth consistent when evaluating repetitions.
  • Review a short coached clip while seated, with leg care serving a separate role.

Depth is part of the exercise definition

Two lifters may use different squat variations, body positions, or training goals. A photograph does not tell you the whole instruction behind either movement. Copying the deepest-looking position is therefore a poor way to decide your own working task.

Depth also changes within a session when a lifter tries to preserve a heavier number. If later repetitions stop noticeably earlier, the record no longer describes identical work. Instead of arguing over a single universal picture, clarify the range your coach wants for the specific version and the conditions that should end a set.

Make the target observable and comfortable

Ask the coach to demonstrate the assigned squat and explain the start, descent, and finish. Rehearse with an appropriate load and a stance they can assess. Use a reference only if it serves the instruction; a box or visual marker is not a reason to force yourself into a position you cannot control.

Record the exercise version, footwear or support if relevant, and the agreed range. A short permitted video from the coach's chosen angle can help them compare repetitions. Keep the camera perspective consistent when using it for review, because a different angle can make apparent depth misleading.

If the range changes as load rises, return to the training question. Is the goal a heavier repetition with a different range, or consistent work in the original version? Record the answer rather than blending the two. ACE's squat guidance describes controlled lowering and return; use qualified instruction to adapt the task rather than forcing depth through pain or an uncertain setup.

Example: a heavier set with a different endpoint

Imagine a lifter completes a familiar squat range with a moderate load. After increasing the weight, the final repetitions become much shorter. They initially record the larger number as straightforward progress.

On review, the coach asks them to label the changed range and repeat an appropriate version that preserves the assigned target. A permitted side-view clip helps compare the start and finish of the movement, while the log records which load was used. The example does not establish a required depth for every lifter. It shows why load and range must be interpreted together, and why keeping a clear target is more useful than protecting a personal-best label.

Use the clip as a seated review task

After training, KIOKOP PRO compression boots can accompany a short look at the agreed squat clip. Full-leg air compression follows fitting the boots, connecting the hoses, and selecting and starting the controls. Your hands can operate the video without continually moving a roller or holding a tool. Keep the controller reachable, stay seated, and leave squat practice for the gym. Check current sizing and instructions to decide whether this home care format suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Should I force more depth if a video looks shallow?

No. Ask a qualified coach to assess the actual version, camera angle, and your controlled range. A single image is not enough to prescribe a deeper position, especially if the movement is painful or unfamiliar.
