Reviewing a Soccer Match With Three Short Clips

Choose a build-up, defensive and transition example, then connect the review to one clear soccer practice question.

Quick summary

  • Select clips by the question, not only the highlight.
  • Include the movement before and after the ball action.
  • End with one decision to discuss or rehearse.

A highlight reel is not automatically a useful review

Goals and shots are easy to find, but the decision you need to understand may happen several passes earlier or away from the ball. A fullback's support position, a midfielder's receiving angle or a forward's pressing cue may never appear in a close-up of the final action. Three carefully chosen clips can therefore be more useful than a long sequence of dramatic moments.

Set a review question with the coach before selecting footage. For example, you might want to know whether you became available during build-up or recognized the team's first action after losing possession. The footage should show the relevant players and space. When it does not, the missing view is a limitation to acknowledge, not a reason to guess what someone must have seen.

Give each clip a different job

Choose one example in possession, one without the ball and one around a change of possession if those phases serve your question. Include enough lead-up to see the starting positions and enough continuation to understand the consequence. A clip that begins after the pass has already gone cannot explain when the receiver became available.

Watch at normal speed before pausing. Write what you can observe: ball location, nearby opponents, teammate options and your action. Then separate interpretation from fact. “The central passing lane was occupied” is observable; “the passer did not trust me” is an assumption that the video cannot establish. FIFA's football-analysis framework includes actions around and away from the ball, which is a useful reminder to look beyond the final touch.

Compare the clips for one repeated decision. Ask the coach or involved teammate about information outside the camera's view. Avoid building a complete tactical judgment from a single angle. Use footage only with appropriate permission and share it within the agreed group. Finish by naming one practice situation that can test the question. The review has done its job when it leads to a clearer action, not when every mistake in the match has been labeled.

Example: support after a center-back receives

Imagine a midfielder reviewing whether they offer a useful option when the center-back has possession. The first clip shows a clear receiving angle; the second shows the midfielder hidden behind an opponent. A third captures the moment possession is lost and the player must change responsibility.

The player notices that the useful angle appeared after checking the opponent's position before moving. They ask the coach how that cue should connect to the team's build-up shape. The next practice includes the same starting relationship, with an opponent able to deny the lane. The review remains focused on a recognizable football picture instead of turning into a general judgment about the entire match.

Keep video review within a settled post-match pause

Optional leg care can give a short review a practical place at home after the match. KIOKOP PRO provides air compression across the legs in one seated setup, so you do not need to keep repositioning a care tool while settling into the evening.

Use the current instructions to set up and start the session. Watch the selected clips, save the question for the coach and close the footage. The convenience lies in combining a brief practical task with a simple personal-care period, with a definite endpoint for both.

Frequently asked questions

Do the three clips need to include a mistake?

They should help answer the review question. A successful decision, an unsuccessful attempt and an uncertain example can be useful, but do not force a negative clip into the set merely for balance.

What if the camera follows only the ball?

Use only the conclusions the view supports. Ask teammates about unseen movement and choose a wider permitted view for future recording if off-ball positioning is the review focus.
