KIOKOP Recovery Guide

How to Tell Whether an Exercise Is New or Just Renamed

Exercise names vary between apps, coaches, and gyms. A short description of the actual task prevents both accidental duplicates and misleading comparisons.

Quick summary

  • Compare the demonstrated movement before relying on the exercise label.
  • Record the version with its key setup and repetition details.
  • Keep the product comparison equally concrete: coverage, fitting, and operation.

A label can conceal either similarity or a real difference

An app may call an exercise a rear-foot-elevated split squat while a class uses another familiar label. Elsewhere, two exercises share a name but use different support, range, or resistance. Neither matching nor different names prove that the training tasks are equivalent.

This can create a scheduling problem. You may add a supposedly new leg exercise after already doing a closely related task in class. It can also create a logging problem when several versions share one history. Start with what the exercise asks you to do, then use the name as a convenient reference.

Describe the movement in plain terms

Write the starting position, whether the feet or hands remain supported, what moves, and how resistance is applied. Note any detail that changes the assigned task: elevation, unilateral versus bilateral work, a pause, or a deliberate movement range. Ask the instructor to demonstrate unclear parts rather than resolving them from a name alone.

Compare that description with the exercise already in your plan. If the versions appear similar, ask whether the second one has a distinct purpose or simply repeats work. If the setup differs, give the version its own entry so its load and repetition history remain readable.

Do not assume a renamed exercise is a guaranteed progression. A change may be useful for a goal, preference, or available setting, but it should earn its place in the program. ACSM's current guidance emphasizes that programs can be individualized without depending on complicated variations. Clear task descriptions let variety remain a deliberate choice rather than a collection of impressive names.

Example: two entries that should not be merged

Suppose a lifter logs both an unsupported row and a chest-supported row under dumbbell row. A larger load in the supported version then becomes the next target for the unsupported one. The shared name has hidden a meaningful setup change.

The lifter separates the entries and adds a brief support description. They ask which version belongs in the current block and retain the earlier record for later use. Conversely, if a new app uses a different name for the exact same demonstrated task, they can preserve its history under one clear label. The example shows why movement description should lead naming, without declaring every variation a separate program.

Apply the same clarity to home leg care

KIOKOP PRO compression boots are a worn full-leg air-compression system with hoses and a separate controller. After fitting, connecting, and selecting and starting the controls, you can remain seated without repeatedly moving a handheld tool. That describes a concrete operation rather than a training exercise with a new name. Compare current fit and instructions, and use the seated time to tidy the exercise labels that actually need clarification.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rename every exercise in my app?

Only where the existing label hides a relevant distinction. A short note about support, stance, or equipment can be sufficient. Keep the system understandable enough that you can use it during the session.
