CrossFit Open Preparation: Rehearse Judging Communication
Prepare a clear count, correction and score-check routine with your judge using the official workout documents for your division.
Quick summary
- Read the correct workout and division documents together.
- Agree how counts, no-reps and time information will be communicated.
- Test the setup before the scored attempt begins.

Knowing the movement is not the same as knowing the attempt
An Open attempt includes more than performing familiar exercises. The official workout description may specify equipment placement, a particular completion point, a tiebreak or submission requirements. Your usual class convention may not answer those details. Start from the documents for the exact year, workout and division you intend to enter.
The CrossFit Games workout pages provide descriptions, scorecards and movement standards. Read those together with the judge rather than sending a link and assuming you reached the same interpretation. A short practical conversation before the attempt is easier than trying to resolve a misunderstood signal after several rounds.
Make the spoken information predictable
Ask how the judge will announce completed repetitions and no-reps. Decide whether a count will be called every repetition or at useful milestones, within the official requirements and the judge's practice. The athlete should know whether an announced number means the latest completed rep or the remaining number. Avoid switching systems halfway through.
Clarify how a correction will be communicated. A short cue tied to the published standard is more actionable than several voices shouting different instructions. Friends can encourage you, but they should not compete with the judge's count. If you do not understand a correction, use the appropriate opportunity to clarify it instead of continuing a repeated error.
Walk through station order, any tiebreak recording and the finish condition. Position equipment according to the published requirements, then check the judge's view. If video is required for your submission, use the specific current instructions and test whether the required action and equipment remain visible. A convenient camera angle is not automatically an acceptable one.
Before starting, confirm who manages the clock, scorecard and any recording. Check the final score together afterward and follow the official submission and validation process. Keep these duties assigned; a judge cannot reliably solve every equipment, timing and camera problem while also watching movement standards.
Example: a rehearsal catches a preventable mismatch
Imagine an athlete plans to listen for the number of reps remaining, while their judge normally calls completed reps. During an untimed walkthrough, they realize that “five” would mean opposite things near the end of a set. They choose one system and rehearse a transition with that language.
They also notice that a piece of equipment blocks part of the camera view. It is moved within the permitted layout before the attempt, and the view is checked again. Neither fix requires performing the whole workout. The rehearsal has improved the clarity of the attempt without adding an unnecessary test effort before the score that matters.
Move from judged work to a quieter home setup
After the attempt, score procedures and cleanup are complete, KIOKOP PRO compression boots can provide a seated full-leg care option. Fit the boots, connect the hoses and select and start the controller as instructed. Sequential air chambers cover the legs without requiring continuous handheld-tool movement.
That gives you a practical place to review the scorecard or save a coaching note while seated. The formal counting is finished; the home routine can stay simple and self-managed.
Frequently asked questions
Can my judge use the standards from last year?
Use the documents for the specific current workout and division. Familiar movements can have event-specific requirements, and older scorecards are not a substitute for the announced instructions.
Should friends call out corrections too?
Agree on communication beforehand. Multiple competing cues can obscure the judge's count; encouragement should not interfere with the official judging process.
