CrossFit Ladder Workouts: Plan for the Growing Rounds
Understand cumulative repetitions in an ascending ladder and choose a pacing and counting strategy that still works as each round grows.
Quick summary
- Calculate cumulative work before judging the early rounds.
- Mark completed rounds and partial reps separately.
- Plan a set-size change before long rounds force one.

Small opening rounds can hide a large workload
An ascending repetition ladder increases the work required in later rounds. Completing the first few rounds quickly does not mean the same pace will carry you through the rest. The amount of work is changing as you go. CrossFit has used ascending ladders in official workouts, but each workout specifies its own movements, increments and scoring.
Start by reading the sequence rather than assuming every ladder adds one rep. Some change the repetitions for both movements; others change only one task or add a load progression. Write the pattern in a form you can follow while exercising. A counting error can make the score misleading even when the effort was consistent.
Use simple arithmetic to make the task visible
For a hypothetical ladder of two movements at two, four, six and eight reps each, the first four rounds contain twenty repetitions of each movement. The eight-rep round alone contains as much work as the first and third rounds combined. That example is arithmetic, not a recommended workout; it shows why opening-round speed is an incomplete guide.
Ask the coach which version and load suit the expected later rounds. A weight that feels manageable for two repetitions may create a very different task at eight or ten. Rehearse enough to understand the movement and planned set size, without completing the whole ladder as a warm-up.
Choose a point at which a single set becomes smaller blocks. The trigger can be an announced round or an observable change agreed with the coach. Keep the counting method compatible with that change: “four of eight completed” should remain clear when you take a planned break. Do not restart the whole round because the set was divided.
Prepare the score format before beginning. If time ends during a round, distinguish completed rounds from additional valid reps according to the workout's instructions. A small written sequence or tally system can reduce the mental burden, provided it does not obstruct the exercise area or distract you during a movement.
Example: the score reveals more than the round name
Imagine you finish the two-, four- and six-rep rounds, then complete one movement in the eight-rep round before time ends. Saying “I reached eight” leaves out how much was completed. Your record instead lists the completed rounds and the additional reps in the required order.
When reviewing the session, notice where the single-set plan changed to smaller blocks. If that change was planned and the repetitions remained clear, it may have served the workout well. For the next similar ladder, adjust one decision, such as the opening pace or the block size, rather than changing the load, movements and scoring method simultaneously.
Leave the counting at the gym
After a ladder session, an uncomplicated seated leg-care routine can be appealing. KIOKOP PRO compression boots use full-leg air chambers controlled by a separate unit. Once fitted and connected, select and start the settings according to the instructions; you do not need to count repetitions or repeatedly move a tool between areas.
That practical contrast is useful when the workout already required careful arithmetic. Record the score accurately first, then settle into a home routine with fewer moving parts.
Frequently asked questions
Is reaching a higher round always better?
Only compare equivalent workouts and valid scoring. A different load, increment, movement option or time limit changes what the round number represents.
What if I forget which round I am on?
Use the last confirmed count and ask the coach or judge for help. An agreed tally method is more useful than guessing a higher round afterward.
