Quick summary

  • Choose a skill question that matters to your current classes.
  • Define the coached starting version and a visible next step.
  • Review progress without adding unrelated practice goals.

A long wish list does not tell you what to practise

CrossFit offers many skills to learn, so it is easy to begin a month wanting a new pull-up, better lifting, faster rope work and more confident handstands at once. Each may be a valid interest. Together, however, they can produce scattered practice with no clear instruction or follow-through. Choose one leading skill question for the next block.

A useful choice connects to your current training and available coaching. It need not be the most spectacular movement you see online. CrossFit's skill-development material treats learning as an ongoing process; a smaller, well-defined progression can therefore be a worthwhile goal in its own right.

Define the goal at three levels

Write the longer-term ambition in ordinary language, then ask the coach which component deserves attention now. “Learn a complex movement” may become “repeat the taught starting position” or “understand the transition at a light practice level.” This makes the goal actionable without promising that the full skill will arrive by a fixed date.

Next, define the current practice version. Include the exercise, equipment, level of assistance and the one cue being observed. Clarify whether you can practise independently or only under supervision. Advanced hanging, inverted or overhead tasks should not become solo experiments because you wrote them in a goal tracker.

Finally, agree on a review question. It might ask whether you can reproduce the same movement without repeated correction, or whether a particular supported variation is now understood. Avoid using only repetition volume as proof of learning. More attempts at an unclear task can create a larger number without answering the coach's actual question.

Find a realistic place for the practice in your existing week. Decide what it replaces or which bounded slot it occupies. Keep other attractive goals in a later list so a new video does not rewrite tomorrow's session. If the selected drill repeatedly fails to address the problem, bring that observation back to the instructor instead of adding more drills yourself.

Example: turn an ambitious movement into a usable appointment

Imagine you want to improve a hanging gymnastics movement. Your coach identifies an earlier coordination task that needs attention and chooses a supported drill for supervised practice. The goal for the block becomes explaining and reproducing that drill, not accumulating tired attempts at the final movement after every class.

You record the cue, the conditions and one observation after each planned appointment. At the review, the coach can decide whether to progress, keep practising or choose another teaching approach. Even if the full movement remains a longer-term goal, the block has produced specific information. That is a stronger basis for the next step than an unstructured month of trying everything.

Leave technical work out of the leg-care slot

A focused skill block can make a simple evening routine valuable. KIOKOP PRO compression boots provide foot-to-thigh air chambers while you sit. Fit and connect them, choose the settings and start the separate controller according to the instructions; the worn system does not require continuous manual application.

Use that practical seated arrangement to write one final practice note if helpful, then close the training log. Your home leg-care choice can stay separate from the technical progression you are working through with a coach.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a skill block last?

Agree on a review point suited to the task and your coaching access. A review date is a time to assess the approach, not a guarantee that a complex skill must be mastered.

Can I work on other skills during regular classes?

Yes, follow the class plan and appropriate coaching. The single leading goal limits extra practice decisions; it does not require refusing every other movement in the program.
