Basketball Passing Practice: Give the Receiver a Real Target
Make passing practice a two-person task by defining the receiver’s position, readiness signal, and next action before increasing distance or pressure.
Quick summary
- Agree where the receiver wants the ball.
- Pass only when the receiver is ready for the task.
- Judge the catch and next action as well as whether the ball arrives.

A pass is useful when the receiver can use it
Two players can complete many passes while practicing very little about timing or a usable catch. If the receiver must reach behind, step away from the intended position, or stop an agreed movement, the ball arriving is only part of the result. Passing practice becomes more informative when both players know the target and what should happen after the catch.
FIBA’s coaching resources treat passing and receiving together. That is a useful starting point for an original partner drill: the passer’s job is not merely to send the ball, and the receiver’s job is not merely to rescue whatever arrives.
Define the catch before increasing difficulty
Start at a manageable distance with enough clear space. Ask the receiver to show the intended target and confirm readiness. Agree whether the task uses a stationary catch, a step toward the ball, or a familiar movement already taught by a coach. Avoid combining new movement and a difficult pass before the basic arrangement is understood.
Choose one pass type appropriate to the task and observe its arrival. Can the receiver catch without a large unnecessary adjustment and continue into the agreed next action? If not, discuss direction, timing, and starting positions before simply throwing harder. A successful catch may still reveal a pass that disrupted the receiver’s intended movement.
Switch roles so both players experience the target from each side. Once the simple task is clear, add one element such as a defined movement or an appropriate passive defender under coaching guidance. Do not add distance, speed, and pressure simultaneously. Keep a short record of the specific difficulty, such as passes arriving behind the moving receiver, so the next block has a useful question to answer.
A catch-and-return task on the wing
Imagine one player starting near the top of the key and a receiver on the wing at a manageable distance. They agree on a ready signal and a catch that allows an immediate controlled return pass. Several balls arrive behind the receiver, forcing a turn before the return. The passer adjusts the target and timing while the receiver keeps the same starting task. They then swap roles. The example makes the outcome more precise than “ten passes completed”: the question is whether each pass supports the receiver’s agreed next action.
Finish with a shared observation and personal care
A passing session can end with one useful observation from each partner before the ball is stored. Later, KIOKOP PRO offers optional six-chamber full-leg air compression in a seated home routine. Fit the boots, connect the hoses, select settings, and start through the separate controller. The system runs without continual manual rolling while you remain awake and stationary. That practical setup gives leg care a comfortable place after court work is complete, while the passing lesson stays focused on the target, timing, and receiver’s next action.
Frequently asked questions
Is a caught pass always a good pass?
Not necessarily. The receiver may have made a difficult adjustment that interrupted the intended action. In practice, define the target and next movement so both players can judge whether the pass was usable, not just whether it avoided hitting the floor.
